Productive discussions on fish, fisheries, climate change and more, held at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in September 2024.
I was lucky to be involved in organizing and being a part of the 22nd Annual FishBase-SeaLifeBase Symposium held this year at my hometown and alma mater, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH).
The first day of the Symposium was dedicated to Advances in the Gill Oxygen Limitation Theory and the Sea Around Us project, while the second day focused on Fishes in Mare Nostrum and the 20-year involvement of AUTH in FishBase.
I was given the honor to introduce the keynote speaker and G.O.A.T. in fisheries science, Daniel Pauly, Killam Professor at the University of British Columbia. My second contribution to the symposium was a talk about my postdoctoral work on the mean temperature of the catch index and its global applications related to the impacts of ocean warming on fisheries catches.
The symposium attracted the attention of local and national news agencies that were keen to meet Daniel and get his insights on the main current threats to our ocean and the future of Mediterranean marine ecosystems.
